Graffiti From Pompeii

I'd heard that the diggers in Pompeii had found plenty of graffiti. I've never seen a collection of it before. If this is for real... its fucking priceless. Enjoy. I did.

  1. Fantastic stuff - the more we evolve as a culture, the more we stay the same, it's remarkable (and kinda wonderful. I got to read a bit of Aristophanes (ancient Greek comedic playwright) in high school - all knob and plop jokes, as Ben Elton would say. Every bit of it translated to modern day. You've got to love that.

  2. Yep. Aristophanes comes through loud and clear. So do most of the ancients, actually. It's interesting to see how uniform are our concerns and interests across time, race and culture...

  3. I read a book by some historian bloke who did a modern version of an ancient Grand Tour (and I can't remember the name dammit!) - anyway it seems the Romans loved to graffiti just about anything, particularly monuments and wonders. Although loads of the graffiti was along the lines of 'I, Julius Maximus Preposterous came to see this thing and was Amazed!' Apparently there are whole books of the stuff.

  4. When I went to Pompeii many years ago we went into a room which had Roman porn all over the walls as mosaics...
